We created the 200 list to celebrate and raise the profile of the many amazing women working in the audio and radio industry.

It’s not a list of all Sound Women members, although everyone on the list has agreed to be a Sound Woman and support our aims.  It’s a list of some of the best in the business.

Star Presenters sit alongside Commissioners, Sales Directors and important Indie chiefs, as well as up and coming production talent, Engineers and award-winning Producers.

It’s not yet finished.  There are some women we haven’t quite tracked down, and there will be exceptions you would like to add…  It may end up being the 2000 list.

We hope conference organisers will look at it when planning events, programme controllers will use it to spot talent, and every woman in the industry will aspire to be on it…

To be on this list you have to be recommended by one of the Sound Women Board.  If you think we’ve missed someone truly inspirational, let us know.

  1. lilmissmosher

    why no Shell Zenner?

  2. Ed Baxter

Anne Karpf, theorist. Vicki Bennett, sound artist and broadcaster. Sarah Washington, one half of Mobile Radio. Honor Harger, director of Lighthouse. Jean Seaton, official historian of the BBC etc.

  3. Really exciting and welcome initiative; SW will provide a creative focus for all women in radio and for those aching to break in. Names to add to your roll call: Dymphna Flynn, producer, Bookclub; Kirsty Young for fantastic work on DID? The women behind, and on air, for Late Junction?

  4. Linda McDougall

why is Sue Mitchell not on this list?

  5. Linda McDougall

    and Lisa Jenkinson?

  6. Linda McDougall

    and Leanne Buckle?

  7. Guest

Marvellous list. Could I suggest a few, though, that I reckon really should be there: Fran Godfrey and Fenella Fudge – long-standing announcers at Radio 2; Harriet Cass and Charlotte Green at Radio 4; Radio 2 travel reporters Sally Boazman, Lynn Bowles and Bobbie Pryor. Some of the most recognisable voices on air in the UK, and hugely accomplished broadcasters.

  8. Thanks everyone for your brilliant suggestions – keep them coming. Some names are new to us, some have us hitting our head shouting “of course!” and others have been contacted by us more than once, but we couldn’t get a response from them in time… There will be a second wave soon!

  9. Chris Tully

No Sue Mitchell, extraordinary R4 producer for many years, and no Asamah Mir from 5 Live, smart, and levens the awful grumpiness of Peter Allen, no mean feat.

  10. guest

Sarah Blunt – senior radio producer with BBC Natural History Unit should be added.

  11. Carol R

Shelagh Fogarty, great broadcaster, and her successor at 5Live Breakfast Rachel Burden would be good additions.

  12. Carol R

And Radio 5′s cricket reporter Alison Mitchell

  13. Caitlin

Really interesting stuff, will definitely be coming back to this website! Don’t see the names of any radio types in Scotland though. Jane Fowler should be on there.

  14. Natalie K

This is a great list, I am currently doing my dissertation on women in radio and this is very helpful and will contribute towards my project!

  15. Lynn Parsons at Smooth Radio and Radio 2 surely? And Janice Long at Radio 2 – a pioneer, and champion for new music. At Radio 4, Corrie Corfield and Alice Arnold, plus I’d like to add my support to the nominations for Harriet Cass and Charlotte Green above. So many great names on the list.

  16. Rupert Flindt

Xanthe Fuller, Natasha Costa Corea, Katie Tyrrell…all highly competent and creative.

  17. Liz Hannaford

    Lyse Doucet and Clare Bolderson?

  18. Fiona Hodge

This is *such* a good thing but it’s massively dissapointing that there are *no* women from digital or multiplatform areas of radio. For a start there’s Katherine Campbell (from Radio 4 who delivered A History Of The World Website) & Nayeema Chowdhury who works tirelessly to ensure the radio that gets produced can be listened to by as many people as possible on as many platforms as possible.

    • Couldn’t agree more! It’s a very linear list and frankly the new opportunities are cross platform, interactive and beyond broadcast!! AND being an expert in these areas is the quickest way to give new entrants a Unique Selling Point – hey it worked for me! OH and to make more money off the back of content you create. What’s not to like!

  19. alan burdett

Helen Thomas… Gets the best out of all the team…that includes the Ginger one….now that must be a hard task….keep going girl …wonderful job..x

  20. Lulu Larkin

Hope SW board will add Sarah Gorrell to the list – Sony Award-winning journalist & Drivetime presenter on BBC Radio Sussex & Surrey. S embraces news, features and audience feedback with warmth, humour and intelligence. Best broadcaster on the station and a joy to listen to.

  21. Anna McNamee

Hello all Sound Women – sign me up! I thought I was already was but am keen to make it official: Anna McNamee, Presenter, Reporter and Producer BBC World Service and Radio 4.
And think you also need to have Claudia Hammond Presenter BBC World Service and Radio 4 etc also on your list.

  22. Clare McGinn

Don’t forget that BBC A&M Production in Bristol and Birmingham have some fantastic and creative women who have been producing documentaries, drama and readings for Radio 3, Radio 4 and the Asian Network for many years. Some have even won awards!

    These include:

Sara Davies (Exec Producer); Kirsten Lass (Exec Producer); Victoria Wakely (Producer); Beth O’Dea (Producer); Christine Hall (Producer); Mary Ward-Lowery (Producer); Sarah Blunt (NHU Radio); Sara Conkey (Producer); Rosie Boulton (Producer); Karen Gregor (Producer); Maggie Ayre (Producer); Perminder Khatkar (Producer); Fran Barnes (Deputy Editor).

You should also include the marvellous Harriett Gilbert who presents A Good Read on Radio 4; The Strand and World Book Club on the World Service.

And Di Spiers, Editor of Readings for RAdio 4

  23. Erin Riley

Anyone got a spare ticket for the launch? Erin.riley@bbc.co.uk – delayed while sorting babysitting and missed the boat!

  24. liz kershaw

Attended a fantastic debate in the House of Commons tonight on female presenters (or rather glaring absence of them) at peak times on BBC radio.

A meeting is now being arranged between MP’s, including Culture Minister Chris Vasey and Mark Thompson.

(Sad to see I’m not on your list. I’ve only been at it on BBC Network Radio for 25 years…..)

    • Thanks Liz – thanks for that and we’re delighted to hear that Sound Women and our Skillset report got a mention in the House. Thanks also to everyone who’s been in touch and is not yet on the list. We’ll be updating the 200 List later this year, with many more names to come…

  25. SimonC

Louise Sutton, assistant editor of 5 Live Sport, Jacqui Oatley and Juliette Ferrington, commentator and reporter/producer extraordinaires @ 5LS. Rachel Burden. Aasmah Mir.
